Donald Payne Jr., a Democratic congressman from Newark, New Jersey, has passed away at the age of 65. Payne Jr. died on Wednesday, March 9, 2023, after suffering a heart attack from diabetes complications earlier this month, according to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.

Payne Jr. was a member of a prominent Newark political family. His father, Donald Payne Sr., served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1989 until his death in 2012. Payne Jr. followed in his father's footsteps, winning election to the Newark City Council in 2002 and becoming its president in 2006.

In 2012, Payne Jr. was elected to Congress to succeed his father. He represented New Jersey's 10th congressional district, which includes Newark and its surrounding suburbs. Payne Jr. served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Small Business Committee.

Payne Jr. was a vocal advocate for his constituents and a strong supporter of civil rights and economic justice. He will be remembered for his dedication to public service and his commitment to the people of New Jersey.

Governor Murphy ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in the statehouse and state offices in memory of Payne Jr. He also expressed his condolences to Payne Jr.'s family and friends, saying, "Don Payne Jr. was a true public servant who dedicated his life to fighting for the people of New Jersey. He will be deeply missed."
